The 6.0-liter Power Stroke engine was plagued by a variety of performance issues.

The 6.0-liter Ford Power Stroke engine came out in 2003 to comply with new emissions standards. Ford rushed the 6.0 liter Power Stroke diesel into production, which resulted in numerous problems. The rush to production meant mechanics were not trained to handle problems, causing unnecessary trips to the Ford service department.

  • The EGR Valve
  • Soot buildup sometimes led to failure of the exhaust gas recirculation valve. Excessive idling and poor fuel quality also contributed to EGR valve failure. Frequent cleaning of the EGR valve was recommended, along with the use of fuel additives.

  • Head Bolt Failure
  • Head bolts under high cylinder pressure were prone to fail. International Powerstroke states that this problem manifests when owners modify engines with computer chips for more power or engines are under a constant load. Guadin Ford in Las Vegas defines constant load as towing more than the maximum combined gross weight rating allowed.

  • EGR Coolers
  • The EGR coolers had a tendency to clog because of soot and oil buildup. EGR cooler failure lead to high coolant temperatures.

  • Turbocharger
  • The variable geometry turbocharger had problems with sticking vanes because of soot buildup. This led to turbo lag and low engine efficiency.
